Public Summary Report IB2022

The IB2022 Public Report highlights the main results from the annual benchmarking exercise for water- and wastewater services in Europe. Also, it showcases best practices from the sector and presents participants' experiences.

In the 2023-cycle 46 water supply and wastewater utilities from 18 different countries participated. Together they serve a significant number of consumers across Europe and beyond.

The IB2022 Public Report first of all provides an overview of the key results of the performance assessment that was carried out in the exercise, showing ranges and median values for 36 key performance indicators for drinking water- and wastewater services. Moreover, the report shows trends in the development of the selected performance indicators over 4-5 years. The 36 indicators represent a part of the total number of indicators that has been analysed in the benchmarking exercise, in the output domain (Access, Water quality, Reliability, Service Quality, Sustainability and Finance & Efficiency), in the throughput domain (like Business Planning, Health and Safety and Asset Management) and to measure progress in reaching the UN SDGs.

For drinking water the report contains indicators like population coverage, quality of supplied water, percentage of lead service connections, mains failures, distribution losses, services complaints, affordability, electricity use, climate footprint, cost coverage by sales revenues, mains rehabilitation, PPP-corrected average water charges, collection ratio and personnel intensity.

For wastewater indicators like population connected to sewers, wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) compliance, sewer and connection blockages, flooding from combined sewers, total complaints, affordability, WWTP energy consumption, climate footprint, cost coverage by sales revenues ratio, sewer rehabilitation, PPP-corrected average wastewater charges, collection ratio and personnel intensity are included.

Next to presenting 36 key indicators, the Public Report describes several participants' good practices. This year with contributions from Canal de Isabel II (Spain), EMASESA (Spain), Oasen (The Netherlands), Municipal Water and Sewage Company in Wroclaw (Poland), Tampere Water LLC (Finland) and Servicio de Agua Potable y Alcantarillado de Lima – SEDAPAL (Peru). Moreover, some programme participants who are already actively preparing for the upcoming CSRD requirements are sharing their experiences, like Dunea (The Netherlands) and Canal de Isabel II (Spain).
